Silver Medals for Team SW

Well done to both the SW U18 Girls and the U18 Boys teams as they made their way through to their respective finals in the first Inter Regional Beach Tournament at Cardiff last weekend.

Although both teams lost out to London, the eventual winners, it was an excellent event, and most will be back next years looking to go one step futher for that Gold medal.

And a big thank you to our SW coaching team: Denise, Flo, Luis and Dave.

  • Girls: 1st Lon, 2nd SW, 3rd WM, 4th SE, 5th Wal, 6th EM, 7th NW, 8th SW/YOR
  • Boy’s: 1st Lon, 2nd SW, 3rd SE, 4th WM, 5th YOR, 6th WC, 7th EM, 8th NW

After 106 matches and 27 Golden Sets, London were crowned the winners of the first-ever Inter Regional U18 Beach Volleyball Championships in both the Men’s and Women’s event.

Played in an exciting format, each squad consisted of two pairs. Pair #1 and pair #2 played a dual against pair #1 and pair #2 from another region. If both pairs from one team win…the job was done! However, if it’s 1-1 in the dual then there is a Golden Set to 15 points, with any two of the four squad players eligible to play.

With resounding dominance in the Women’s tournament, not dropping a set the whole tournament, the two London pairs of Keefe/Canevari and Knott/Erminio played the event perfectly.  The no. 1 pair were pushed by Wales and the West Midlands during the pool and the knockout stages, but when the final matched them up against the South West they were convincing winners. The South West pairs of Morgan/Hill Anning and Davis/Newton were unable to bring the fire that got them into the final.

Women’s final results:
Pair 1:  (LON) Keefe/Canevari vs (SW) Hill Anning/Morgan: 21-14, 21-14

Pair 2: (LON) Knott/Erminio vs (SW) Davis/Newton: 21-17, 21-14

In the Men’s event the London squad played with equal dominance, storming their way to the final winning all their duals. Khan/Soczewka and Bello/Sander only dropped one match on the way, to the Wildcard pairing of Howe/Naydenov, but were victorious in the Golden Set against the Wild Card team.

In the final Huggins and Faulkner-Ham and Lyall/Craig were unable to find the form that led them to the final but did push the number one pairing by taking the first set in the final.

Men’s final results:
Pair 1:  (LON) Khan/Soczewka vs (SW) Faulkner Ham/Huggins: 15-21, 21-19, 15-8

Pair 2: (LON) Bello/Sanders vs (SW) Craig/Lyall: 21-8, 21-10
