The Next SWVA Chairperson

Some of you will already know, that this is my 14th and final year as SW chairman, I no longer play the game and I feel it’s time for a younger person to take the lead and to steer our group of excellent volunteers for the next period.

Just to confirm, it’s just the Chair duties that I am standing down from, I am more than happy to continue supporting the committee in my other activities.

Looking back, the SWVA is in a very different place to where it was when I became Chair in 2011. There is a basic outline of tasks in the Job Discription on the web site, you should have an understanding of how the sport of volleyball works, we are a region and hence we do regional things. In that respect we are a self funding and self governing organisation but of course we align ourselves with the National Govering Body for the sport.

From the Job Discription:

• To attend and chair Area Executive Committee meetings and the Annual General
Meeting. Within those meetings to ensure orderly conduct; fair and appropriate opportunity for all to contribute; suitable time allocation per item; determining order of agenda; directing discussion towards consensus; clarifying and summing up actions and policies.
• To provide strategic direction for the Association (working with other Officers)
• To represent the Area Association at relevant meetings (e.g. Regional Commission) or to delegate this to another member
• Make decisions whenever the need arises, in consultation with other officers when appropriate.
• Agree meeting agendas and approve minutes with the Secretary.

The Best Bits

On the plus side, its a very rewarding job, you will meet and work with some excellent people across the region and around the UK, all adding value to our sport.
As a region, we run a number of different projects and activities, each is run by different volunteers, as chair, you need to keep an eye on each project, make sure that everyone has the required tools, support, funding, equipment and online services.

We have a great set up, not all run at a profit, its a balancing act across the whole program of events. That’s about it, do contact me if you would like to know more, a smooth hand over is of coure the prefered option.

Job Perks

There may sometimes be a few perks that go with the job, during my time I have enjoyed free VE event tickets with mileage, invites to VE promotial events with VIP status, a bit of free merchandise, and you will meet everyone who runs the sport in the UK.
